On August 5, 2026, a small animated film quietly opened in China: 《牛来》(Niú Lái — "The Ox Has Come"). Director Xin Yumeng and his mother, screenwriter Sun Lifang, made up the entire crew — two people. No AI. Five years of modeling, animating, editing and voicing it themselves.

The result, intentional or not, looked like a 2000s PowerPoint animation — stiff, crude, "worse than an amateur AI clip," as some viewers put it. Even the studio behind it is unlikely: it used to be an interior decoration company before pivoting to film in 2021.

A disastrous start

In the first 9 days, total box office was just ¥7,169 (about $1,063) — the lowest of the year. Only 236 people had seen it. Screenings dropped from 245 a day down to just 4.

Then everything changed

Clips went viral — people started buying tickets just to see if it was really that bad. On August 15, daily box office suddenly jumped to ¥717,800. Audiences began arranging their seat-selection screens to spell out the Chinese character "牛" (ox).

By August 17, total box office passed ¥10 million. By August 19, cumulative revenue had crossed ¥25 million (about $3.5 million) — some forecasts run as high as ¥60-135 million. The title "牛来" also rhymes with "牛市来" ("the bull market is coming"), so stock traders started buying tickets for luck.

Why it matters

Some theaters pulled the film, worried its "badness" would embarrass their hometown, Dalian. But for most viewers, it stopped being about quality and became about courage, sincerity, and an unlikely win. A production that cost less than a studio coffee machine outran big-budget releases at the box office.
